Is It OK To Feed Your Ferret Cat Food?

Ferrets are adorable pets that are very active and playful. However, due to lack of basic information about them, owners of the pet usually are confused about one question. Is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food? The answer is not entirely a yes or no. They are carnivorous and love meat, especially cooked. If you can find quality ferret food in your locality then there is nothing like it. However, cat food is good enough to provide them most of the nutrients they need, in case it is hard to find good ferret food.

NOT ALL CAT FOOD CREATED EQUAL

If you are planning to feed your ferret with cat food, ensure that it has at least 30-35% protein content and 15-20% fat content. High quality protein content in the food keeps the them active and energetic. Kitten food is usually preferred for ferrets if you are unable to find traditional food. However, kitten food like kibble should be brown and crunchy. This also helps in maintaining the dental health of the pet. Crunchy cat food can also be given to them. However, soft cat food should be avoided.

CANNED OR DRY CAT FOOD FOR YOUR FERRET

Canned or dry cat food is almost as good as ferret food. But you should make sure the food is low in fiber, sugar and grains. The fiber content in the food should be less than 3% at all costs. Sweets and sugar content also prove harmful to them causing insulin related complications when they grow old. The food should be dry but it should not be soft. Dry diet is always more nutritious for the pet.

THE ADVANTAGE OF FEEDING YOUR FERRET CAT FOOD?

The other advantage of dry ferret diet is that it is more economical. It also lasts longer and does not get spoilt when stored. If you are wondering “is it okay to feed your ferrets cat food?” you need not be worried if you can ensure that the food contains some vitamin supplement as well. Finally you should make sure the ferret drinks enough water to avoid dehydration. Many pet owners leave a small bowl of water near the cage to ensure it sips from it every now and then.

AROMATHERAPY FOR DOGS

Emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, fear and love play a crucial role in human being’s life. These feelings are also an integral part of an animal’s world. Aromatherapy also provides immediate, profound and long lasting results on animal’s overall health and well being.

Leaving animals along for a long period of time, lack of attention, unhealthy food, abandonment, etc are some of the common causes of stress in animals. These could lead to health problems like fatigue, excessive itching, shedding, panting and even aggression. Aromatherapy can be used to treat hot spots, itchy skin, ear infections, rashes, bites, cuts, scrapes, incisions from surgeries, stinky breath, flatulence and the list goes on.

Dogs are man’s faithful friends for life. Bringing affection, joy and loyalty into our lives, they are more emotionally dependent on their owners. They are in tune with our moods and show more difficulty in coping with emotional stress and loneliness. Hence they require more attention then any other animals.

If your dog is suffering from yeast or ear infection use either of these oils to treat it. Put these oils in a spray bottle with a base oil and swab the inside of the ear after cleansing.

  • Lavender – soothes the skin and relieves itching
  • Tea Tree – powerful antibacterial and antifungal
  • Bergamot – antifungal properties
  • Roman Chamomile – soothing and gentle, aids in healing tissue.

RECIPES

To repel fleas, use peppermint, citronella, lemon and clary sage essential oils. Ticks are repelled by essential oils such as Geranium, Bay, Lavender and Myrrh. 15-20 drops of these oils diluted with base oil and sprayed on your dog daily will keep the ticks and fleas away.

To relieve Anxiety & Loneliness – Blend 1 drop of Rose otto, 5 drops of cypress and marjoram essential oils with carrier oil. Apply on the spine and head lightly, repeating whenever necessary.

Relieve emotional stress – Mix 6 drops of lavender, 1 drop of Neroli and 4 drops of Marjoram essential oils with carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. Apply on the spine and head lightly. Repeat when necessary.

Reduce nervousness & hyperactivity – Six drops of lavender, 2 drops of roman chamomile and 4 drops of petitgrain essential oils mixed with carrier oil and applied lightly to spine and head.

Keep in mind dog’s sensitive sense of smell into account when using essential oils. A dog that is besieged by the smells of blends may pace, whine, or rub her / her head on the ground. Introduce your dog to essential oils slowly and in small amounts.

KOI SUPPLIES

Koi Fishare some of the most beautiful and colorful pond fish but, keeping them requires at least a basic knowledge of fish and outdoor ponds and a few essential supplies.

Koi Fish SuppliesPart of giving your yard a tranquil feeling is placing a fountain in your pond.  This not only drowns out unwanted noise, it stirs the water and is the easiest way to put oxygen back into the water which is important for the health of your fish.

Owners will also need to install a filter in their pond that is designed to maintain the quality of the water.  A filter removes unwanted pollutants which will decrease the chance that the Koi will have health issues.  Because the only way a filtration system can process the water is if the water is moving, you will also need to install a pump.  A pump is also extremely important for the health of the pond.  Having a fountain or waterfall in the pond aids in the water’s movement but, they should not replace a pump entirely.  Unfortunately, they are not strong enough to help with the filtration of the pond on their own.

Some supplies are not used on a daily basis but should still be kept on hand.  Dechlorinator is used when replenishing the water level of your pond with tap water.  It is essential to eliminating harmful chemicals from the tap water.  The pH level and the Nitrate level of the water should be checked on a weekly basis.  Pond owners do this by using test kits that are available in any pet supply store.  Pond salt or baking soda should also be kept on hand on a regular basis.  They can be added to the pond water to regulate the pH and Nitrate levels of the water when tests show the chemical levels are off.

Because Koi come in such brilliant colors, they are susceptible to fall victim to outdoor predators like Herons, kingfishers, foxes, cats, raccoons and badgers.  Owners can keep their fish safe through the design of their ponds.  Owners can keep water deep enough to prevent Herons from wading in it.  They can also create overhangs on the side of their ponds high enough to prevent predators from reaching the water.  Plus, if the pond is set under the shade of a tree, it will block the view of the pond from the air.  Pond owners can also purchase a net that can be placed over the entire pond ensuring the safety of the Koi.  A net will also prevent debris like leaves from falling into the water and messing up the pond.

Food is the most important supply.  Koi eat a variety of foods but it is important to keep a basic food source on hand.  Koi have been known to eat out of their owner’s hands and therefore snacks and treats can be offered to your fish.

When setting up your outdoor pond and considering the kind of supplies you will need, remember that although Koi take a little bit of effort on the part of their owners, they are mesmerizing, gorgeous fish that are well worth the effort.
