ARE YOUR BIRD HOUSES BEING USED?

Bird HouseHave you taken the time to go buy some decorative bird houses for the birds in and around your yard only to find the birds aren’t living in them? So let’s take a closer look at the bird houses you have bought. Are the bird houses the right size for the types of birds you want to live in them? Different types of birds have different requirements. Check the inside of the house. Measure to see how large or how small it is. Check the entrance holes to the bird house, make sure they are large enough for the birds, but still too small for the squirrels and other animals that may threaten the well-being of the birds. The distance of the entrance hole to the floor of the bird house is very important to a bird. If you are not sure of these facts about the birds in your neighborhood, do some research to find out what they prefer.

Make sure there is enough ventilation in the bird house. If the house is too warm in the summer, the birds will avoid it. There should be sufficient holes in the house for ventilation. There should also be a drainage hole in the floor of the bird house for added ventilation and to prevent standing water inside the bird house. Stand water is dangerous for birds because of the parasites and diseases, which can breed in the standing water and because baby birds can drown. If the house you purchased does not have these, make your own with the use of a saw for slats in the floor, and slats in the walls for ventilation and drainage or use a drill to drill small holes for drainage and ventilation.

Make sure you can access the inside of the birdhouse through the top, front or sides to monitor the nest and clean the bird house. If you can access t he bird house from the bottom, there is a chance the nest could fall out of the bird house, and will make it impossible to clean or monitor the nest without disturbing it.

Most birds prefer the bird house to blend in with the surroundings. They don’t like a bird house that attracts attention. Brown or dark green will help camouflage the house and the paint will help preserve the wood. Never use a toxic paint, such as lead-based paint or varnish on the interior or exterior of a bird house. When the birds peck at the house they can inadvertently ingest some of the paint which is harmful to their health, while the fumes of the varnish are dangerous to both adult birds as well as their offspring. So if you need to repaint the bird house, you might keep in mind that the houses of the Purple Martins is white, while tan, gray works for other species of birds. These colors will also reflect the heat and help keep the house a cooler temperature in the summer.

If the bird house has all the necessary features and is made from a durable, waterproof material, then you might look at the location of the bird house. Birds will snub a house because of the location.

The Truth About Dolphin Drive Hunting?

Murdered Dolphins

Dolphins are one of the most amazing mammals on the planet but yet their population is declining. It’s shocking to think that these magnificent creatures are still being hunted today in 2008. Their are a number of organizations that just will not stop this murderous business. This company’s are mainly Japanese but also practices that occur in Peru the Solomon and Faeroe islands. These people mainly employ the hunting method of dolphin drive hunting. This is the dolphins are rounded up into bays, alcoves, and beaches were their escape route is blocked of so they can’t escape.

The dolphins are then slaughtered for their meat [blubber] which is sold to the Japanese Chinese and Taiwan’s food industry. The blubber and meat of the dolphins caught has been found to have dangerous levels of mercury, and cadmium. Science has revealed that the levels are high enough to pose a health risk for those commonly eating the meat and scientists warn that children and pregnant women shouldn’t eat the meat at all.

Not all the dolphins are killed a few of the more lucky ones are sold to delphiniums mainly in Japan. This means that the industry is still a very profitable business the dolphins have been known to fetch up-to $150.000 each when sold to delphiniums.

Thousands of protests have been held in an attempt to kill the industry. Some extremists have been known to risk their lives by swimming out to cut the nets were the dolphins are being detained in large numbers. One of the rescue attempts was conducted by American actress Hayden Patentee war she was involved in a confrontation with Japanese fishermen as she tried to ruin the hunt. She paddled out on a surfboard, with five other surfers from the United States, in an attempt to reach a pod of dolphins that had been captured. The following protest lasted more than 10 minutes before the surfers were forced to return to the beach.

While the barbaric method of slitting the dolphins neck to slaughter them has know been banned in Japan, the animals still suffer extreme distress when in captivity, shown by studies by society’s such as the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Bottle-nose and Dusky Dolphins are the main species targeted but the Striped, Spotted, and Risso’s dolphin are also caught often. The upsetting thing is that a lot of these dolphin hunters are planning to increase the number of boats and depots around the coast of Japan notably in the town of taiga on the Kiwi peninsula.

Hundreds of organizations are continually trying to get this practice stopped such as the Elsa Nature Conservancy, Sea Shepherd, and World Society for the Protection of Animals and even the International Whaling Commission due to the killing of pilot whales. Dolphin hunting is an ongoing issue that will continue to be stamped out by millions of us especially Europe and the U.S.A let’s hope all we can make a difference. Thank you for reading
