People from the medical field actually knows this by the term ”tracheobronchitis,” which indicates some sort of bronchitis that affects the trachea. This kind of disease is not really that serious and will eventually pass as the weeks go by.

CAUSES OF KENNEL COUGH

Kennel coughs are induced by inhaling certain kinds of viruses and bacteria that is present in the air. The bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica is usually credited as the one which causes this disease but other viruses such as the canine distemper virus or CDV and canine parainfluenza, has also been associated with the disease. Among the veterinary medical community, it is agreed that an animal can only acquire this disease after it has been exposed to these multiple viruses for quite some time. Therefore, it is only those who usually spend a lot of time around other dogs and who stay in their kennels for a long time who are quite susceptible to this disease.

Examples of these are those who participate in dog shows and those at the shelter or pet store.

Kennel coughs are not a source of serious concern as they are usually not life-threatening, but if you see the following symptoms of kennel cough in your dog, you may want to consult your veterinarian immediately. First of all, your dog will develop some sort of dry cough due to the inflammation of his bronchi and trachea. This will cause your dog to cough up some white and foamy substance. In other dogs, they may develop an inflammation in their eyelids or what you call conjunctivitis. They may also develop nasal discharges.

To diagnose this disease the vet will do some simple physical examinations on your dog or conduct a simple medical history check on your dog. The kind of cough that is associated with this disease is very much characterized and massaging his throat to induce the coughing will reveal if he has acquired the disease. If your dog coughs up a discharge that is either yellowish or greenish in color, he may require other tests to be done so that he could rule out other possible diseases. Tests such as a complete blood count or a laboratory test to see if there is any bacteria or other microorganism in your dog’s trachea would be needed to rule out canine distemper, pneumonia, or influenza.

Immunizing your dog is one of the ways in which you can prevent this disease from happening to your dog. This is usually done when you need to kennel your dog or before travelling. It will be needed before your dog can be admitted. The immunization may not possibly work sometimes as this can be caused by several different pathogens. So, to prevent this, you may need to do some active preventive actions in your part. Do not let other unfamiliar dogs to come near him or use his water and food bowl. If he is going to participate in some dog show, be sure that the area is well-ventilated so that the air is regularly flushed out of the room. Antibiotics are frequently used in treating kennel coughs to prevent further infections that may arise from it. This will do him good as he recuperates from the kennel cough. It’s vital for owners to recognize these symptoms should they happen in their family dog.

The Yale Law School Library is embarking on a novel approach for dealing with student stress : starting next week, students will not only be able to go to the library to check out the books they need to write their term papers, but now they will also be able to “check out” 30 minute visits from the school’s new Therapy Dog, Monty a border terrier mix belonging to librarian Julian Aiken.

While you won’t find Monty (full name “General Montgomery“) squirreled away in the “Rufferance” section working on his thesis, as a trained therapy dog, he has gone through an extensive set of tests and exercises designed to “ensure that a dog can handle sudden loud or strange noises; can walk on assorted unfamiliar surfaces comfortably; are not frightened by people with canes, wheelchairs, or unusual styles of walking or moving; get along well with children and with the elderly; and so on.” A well trained therapy dog will be comfortable being pet by an ever changing cast of people in a variety of settings and will help a person feel calmer in its presence. As stated in Wikipedia, “a therapy dog’s primary job is to allow unfamiliar people to make physical contact with it and to enjoy that contact.” That might sound like a simple task, but you’d be surprised at just how much goes into training therapy dogs! A video I found on YouTube gives a good overview of just how much training the average therapy dog needs.

Currently, Monty is scheduled to be on site for only a 3 day test run to see how students react to the program. One student, 26 year old Sebastian Swett, signed up for one of the 30 minute visits from Monty had doubts about how much an effect one visit from a therapy dog might have on the stress of attending law school, saying, “I don’t think its going to solve anybody’s anxiety problems, but it’s certainly nice to play with a dog for half an hour.” However, according to the Journal of Gerontology, in a study involving the elderly and feelings of loneliness, “Researchers found even one 30-minute long session of animal assisted therapy reduced loneliness to a statistically significant degree.”

I can only imagine that the effect trained therapy dogs would have on reducing the stress of an overworked, exhausted, and emotionally drained law student would be similar. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how much stress Monty the therapy dog can actually alleviate for study-wrecked minds of the students of Yale during the upcoming trial program to get any real idea of how useful therapy dogs will be in this unique context… so until then, the verdict is out!

Dogs often require to be trained in obedience and other training forms before they can serve people or be able to associate with other people and dogs. For most dogs, there is a need for dog training leads especially younger dogs.

Things To Consider When Buying Dog Training Leads

There are two major things that need to be considered when you get dog training leads for your dogs. The very first thing to consider when buying training leads is the size of the dog that you have. Dogs grow quickly so you might try to anticipate the actually size of your dog when it matures when you think of buying a dog training lead. If the puppy is still too small for a large sized training lead, get an ordinary leash for the puppy until it grows enough to be trained.

One more thing to consider when buying dog training leads is the area that you plan to take your dog out in. If you live in the suburbs where you can expect less traffic and more open spaces for your dog to frolic, you might try to get a longer dog training lead but if you live in a busy city where there is traffic everywhere, try to get the shorter traffic training lead.

The Uses Of Dog Training Leads

Many people ask why we need dog training leads. Actually, these training leads are a safety precaution on top of the fact that it trains our dogs to stay close to us. It is a safety precaution for times when the dog is still not well trained enough and might lunge after people or other animals. Leads for dog training keep dogs in check and keep you away from any liabilities if you are vigilant.

Another need for dog training leads is for training purposes when you wish to train your dog to seek something out and then come back to you. For this kind of training, you will need longer a longer lead. Other dog training leads are for training your dog to say close to you, this can be especially helpful for training guide dogs for the blind before introducing the harness.

In some countries or parts of some countries, dogs are really required to be on a leash or a dog training lead when you take them for a walk. This is to be sure that the dogs are under human control all the time and to lessen any danger when it comes to biting and chasing.

I found this strange considering the Xolo, as it’s called, is considered an ancient breed that can trace it’s lineage back 3,000 years to the Aztecs, Mayans and Toltec civilizations.

The reason for this in again, out again, in again status is that the dog had fallen out of popularity since coming into vogue in the 1940s and that the AKC dropped it from the club’s stud registry about 20 years later when the dog faded from popularity like so many other dog fads. In fact, only about 1,000 Xolos exist in the United States today according to a New York Times article quoting stats compiled by the American Pet Products Association.

But that may change as the pendulum appears to be swinging back in the Xolos favor. I mean, no hair, non-allergenic — I can see the appeal. But the breed, as the article goes on to explain is definitely not for everyone: the Xolo is not a little docile toy-type petr. It has a strong prey drive, is strong-willed and is protective of it’s owner and will sometimes bit to defend them from threats real or imagined.

Read the entire Article HERE to learn more about the Xolo.

Parrots are remarkable and intelligent birds. Research proves that parrots have the intellectual abilities of a small child. For many, teaching a parrot tricks for entertainment is enough of a reason to own this bird. However, teaching your parrot tricks can have other purposes and functions. It will transform your parrot into a better behaving and more sociable bird.

When teaching your parrot tricks try to keep the teaching lessons short. Long sessions will only tire the parrot and make it a very negative experience for your bird. You also want to keep the exercise sessions positive and wait to start a training session until you are both ready. Choose a room that is quiet and a free of distractions, as this will improve your parrot’s learning potential and increase the chances of the training to be a success. What’s more, the room should be well lit which will make your parrot more comfortable and more open to new experiences. It is extremely important that you are relaxed and be stress-free when starting to train your parrot. Patience is critical when teaching your parrot tricks, as not having enough patience will greatly affect the way your parrot learns new tricks.

Parrot trick #1 – Step Up

One of the easiest parrot tricks that bird trainers recommend is teaching your parrot how to “step up”. Your parrot will use this exceptionally useful trick all the time and for the rest of his life. Teaching your parrot to step onto the object that is placed in front of him is an easy task. Simply place one finger in front of the bird’s feet and ask him in a calm soothing voice to “step up”. For large birds you using your forearm is recommended. You can use his favorite snack or any food to persuade your parrot to move forward. Remember to award your parrot with the food when he masters the new parrot trick.

Parrot trick #2 – Turn Around

Another parrot trick that owners find it easy to teach their parrots is to “turn around”. Just follow these simple directions and your parrot will learn a new trick in no time. While your parrot is in a standing position offer him a piece of food. As he starts reaching for it move one hand slowly to his back, your bird will have to turn his head around to see the food. Some birds make the turn immediately, others will require a little of practice before they learn how to do a full turn, so be patient. Once again, remember to give your parrot the food as his reward for job well done.

Parrot trick #3 – Teaching Your Parrot to Speak

Teaching your parrot how to speak can solve the problem of screeching with birds that are too vocal. Many birds use the screeching to get their owners get attention. Both, you and your parrot will enjoy the parrot’s vocalization more when he can actually say words. By teaching a parrot talk you can enjoy his company more. To make the process easier and more enjoyable for your parrot, remember that you should to start with only one simple – one or two syllables – word. You can of course teach your parrot one of your favorite words. The most popular first word to teach your parrot is “hello”. Repeat the word slowly several times until the parrot sounds the word in response. Once your parrot responds, give him his food reward. The first sound your parrot makes may not be the word that you are trying to teach him. Once again – be patient – the idea is to get your bird to respond to your voice. You can repeat this exercise several times until the parrot begins to mimic the word.

Most dogs want to make their owners happy, but certain behaviors such as walking on a leash without pulling, potty training, or controlled barking require training, as they do not come naturally. This is why dog obedience training is so important for all dogs, regardless their size, breed, or character.

Understand Your Dogs Basic Needs

Before you start dog obedience training, you should try to learn about his basic needs. Obedience training for dogs requires a “partnership” with your pet: your dog is not the only one who has to work on his behavior. Just as other types of dog trainings, dog obedience training requires a lot of work and determination, but the benefit is that you develop a great bond with your dog. As a result of this training, your dog will learn to trust you and communicate with you.

Dog obedience training concentrates on five commands: sit, stay, come, down, and drop-it. The key objective of dog obedience training is to teach your dog the proper behavior around other people. These commands will definitely make your daily interactions easier and hassle-free.

Dog obedience training can be a challenging process, as requires a lot of patience and determination. So, start with a command that is easy for your dog to learn teaching your dog to come to you when you call his name. Your dog will not learn a command after one time, thus repetition is key in dog obedience training. It takes multiple attempts for your dog to understand what he is expected to do.

Many dog owners believe that dog obedience training involves punishing your dog when he does not perform or misbehaves, especially if you didn’t catch him in the act (you found your half-eaten shoe). Punishing him afterward will not achieve anything, as your dog won’t connect your anger with his behavior from hours before. However, if you do catch him misbehaving, simply address him with a stern “No.” Hitting or yelling at your dog may have an opposite effect and cause more aggressive behavior instead of improvement. Thus, try to express your disappointment in a calm, but firm manner.

Keep in mind that dog obedience training is a continuous process. You should always find time to work with your dog so he can master the commands.

Dog obedience training is a wonderful occasion to interact with your dog making the special bond you two share stronger. As you learn to trust each other, you can also focus on behaviors that will keep you all safe and happy.

Although guinea pigs are low maintenance and easy to take care for pets, they still require some routine grooming. The extent of the care you need to provide to your pet depends on whether they are a short-haired or long-haired variety.

Although guinea pigs are low maintenance and easy to take care for pets, they still require some routine grooming.

The Nails

Your guinea pig’s nails need frequent trimming. You can also let your guinea pigs file his nails on rocks, rough stones or bricks, so you don’t have to clip them.

The hardest part of trimming your guinea pigs nails is holding him still, as most likely he will be nervous and will squirm a lot during the process. With patience and practice, the process will become part of your routine and your guinea pig will likely get used to it and grow to be less timid. The best solution is to have someone to help you. Wrap your guinea pig in a towel, with his feet sticking out. Have one person hold the guinea pig while the other trims the nails. If you have no help, place your guinea pig on a tennis racket and cover him with a light towel, which should calm him down a little.

Be careful not to cut your guinea pig’s nails too short. To avoid cutting into the quick (the part inside the nail where the blood vessel and nerve endings are located) do not clip more than 1/4 inch of the nail tip. In light or translucent nails (in most guinea pigs), the quick is clearly visible, in black nails, the quick is nearly impossible to see, so you will need to guess.

If you accidentally cut into the quick and cause some bleeding do not be terrified. Simply stop the bleeding using Kwik-Stop powder or similar product that all pet stores sell. You can also use iodine, which will stop the bleeding altogether. Make sure the bleeding stops before putting your pet back in his cage.

The Teeth

Like most rodents, your guinea pig has two incisors that may require regular filing by your vet. If the teeth grow too long your guinea pig won’t be able to eat. Eating or chewing on hard foods and objects helps to keep these teeth in check, so make sure there are a few things in the cage for your pet to chew on. Still, inspect your pet’s teeth regularly for chips or broken teeth as well.

Brushing

Regular brushing will keep your guinea pig coat clean, shining, and healthy. The brushing time is also a good opportunity to inspect your pet for lice or skin sores. For short haired guinea pigs the brushing needs are nominal – a few times a week works well. But if you have one with longer hair daily brushing is vital.

For short haired pet use a small brush with gentle bristles. Long fur that might get tangled, will require a small metal comb, which will remove all of the excess hair and mites.

Bathing

Bathing is quite stressful for guinea pigs, since they do not like to be bathed. Fortunately, most guinea pigs rarely need bathing, if ever. If however, you do need to bathe your guinea pig (lice or recommended by your vet) use a shampoo formulated especially for guinea pigs (cavies); a mild shampoo for kittens, or baby shampoo will work as well. Dry your guinea pig with a towel the best you can and keep her warm until he is completely dry.

Here are some dog training tips that can help you make drastic changes in your dog’s behavior toward other animals and strangers.

From getting your puppy potty trained, to teaching your dog new tricks and how to behave properly – dog training can be challenging. Here are some dog training tips that can help you make drastic changes in your dog’s behavior when he is dealing with other animals and other people.

When is it a good time to start dog training?

The recommended time to start dog training is when your dog is between six to eight weeks old. You may try earlier, but that depends on the puppy, so use your judgment.

Be Positive, firm and friendly

Positive attitude and friendliness are essential dog training tips. Use positive reinforcement by offering dog treats and a lot of praise when he acts properly. Your tone of voice should be associated with the command. For “heel” and “come” you want to use a happy, friendly voice. When you want your dog to “sit” or “stay” your voice should be firmer.

Understand your dog

Although only an animal, every dog has unique personality, aptitude, patience, and receptiveness to dog training. In his mind you and your family are pack leaders who give orders and your dog obeys. Understanding your dog’s capacity is one of the fundamental dog training tips, since it is vital to his successful training.

Use Simple Commands

Dogs do not communicate the way humans do. When you training your dog you want him to understand what you want him to do, understand that you are pleased with his behavior and that he is being praised for his actions. The easiest way to develop this mutual understanding is to use this dog training tip – when training your dog follow simple commands, such as sit, roll over or lie down.

Play games with your dog

A different positive dog training tip is to play games with your dog that help reinforce proper behavior. These games are an excellent (and fun) learning experience for the dog. Though repetitive, these exercises will entrench your dog with good habits.

Relate commands to different situations

Dogs are situational learners and they do not understand that “sit” applies to every location and situation. To train your dog’s behavior effectively, you need to practice in various surroundings until your dog responds correctly regardless of location or situation. It is also important that everyone in your family practices with your dog, so he will learn that he needs to listen to everybody.

Other handy dog training tip proposes sending your dog to for obedience classes that could be useful for both of you. Your dog will learn the importance of obeying commands, and you, as the dog owner can learn how to successfully train your dog at home.

We all want to be proud owners of well trained and obedient dogs. The advices on how to train your dog effectively are countless. Still, the basic dog training tips are: keep it short, keep it simple, keep it fun.

African Grey parrots are capable of developing a large vocabulary and communicating easily with their owners.

African Grey parrot is a medium-sized bird 10 to 14 inches in length. There are two different types of African Grey parrots: the Congo African Grey with light gray coloring and a red tail, and the Timneh African Grey, of a darker charcoal gray color and a maroon tail. Typically, male parrots are slightly larger than females – 12 to 14 inches in length. Although both sexes look almost the same, Female African Grey parrots normally have smaller head and a slender neck.

African Grey parrots are in for a long commitment

African Grey parrots have a long lifespan up to 60 years, thus they need an owner who can make a long term commitment to them. Because of their high intelligence and sensitivity, African Grey parrots call for a caretaker who is knowledgeable and who can easily recognize their needs. They get bored easily, so a stimulating and interactive environment is a must. Without their intellectual needs met African Grey Parrots will exhibit behavioral problems, become cranky or show signs of self-mutilation.

Discipline your parrot to avoid behavior issues

Typically properly behaved and well mannered, nurturing African Grey parrots brings a few challenges. They pick up behaviors very quickly so teaching them good habits should be an easy task. Still, these parrots need to be disciplined and watch closely; otherwise, they will get into trouble: they might chew wires or bite.

These parrots love affection and attention

African Grey parrots are very social birds. In the wild these parrots typically flock together. In home environment, they will adopt their owner’s family as their flock. African Grey parrots are known to cuddle with their owners. Still, limit your affection to petting and head-scratching, as these parrots do not like intense physical contact. Regurgitation (throwing up small amounts of food with the intention of feeding it to a loved one) may not be considered a pleasant by the owner, but for African Grey parrots is a sign of deep affection and love. They will also try to “kiss” their owners on the mouth.

It is important for their owners to understand these birds’ need for a companion. African Grey parrots express their loneliness excessively, by becoming very vocal, plucking their own feathers, or they may start to bite. Because of these tendencies, African Grey parrots may not be good pets for a family with children. Their beaks are hard and strong and they might unintentionally hurt the children.

African Grey parrots have unique and exceptional human-like personalities. If you are one of the lucky owners, you will enjoy the intelligence and eccentricity rarely found in other animals.

Your guinea pig need time to adjust to new life

You finally brought your guinea pig home and cannot wait to sit on your couch, read the paper or watch TV while he is happily munching snacks in your lap. It will happen, but with time, practice and patience.

During the first 3-4 days it can be very tempting to pick him up and cuddle with him. However, this is a new environment and a very stressful time for your new pet. You need to provide hiding spots for your guinea pig, especially when you have more than one guinea pig. Each cavy needs his or her own place or a fight could break out. Give your guinea pig several days to adjust to this new life. But, remember – you don’t want to scare him, so take small steps and be patient.

Looming over your guinea pig’s cage will only frighten him

Shadowing him is only going to terrify your guinea pig. Instead, when you want to observe him, kneel down to eye level with the cage.

Bribery really works when building trust with your guinea pig

As crazy as it sounds, the best way to get your guinea pig to trust you is bribery with treats. There are so many things your guinea pig loves to eat that finding something to bribe him will not be an issue and it will help gain his trust.

Start by showing your guinea pig the delicious treat, and then set it at the cage’s open door. After that relax, sit with your hands in your lap, and wait. After awhile, if he didn’t show interest in the treat, pick it up slowly, close the cage door and leave. Keep trying a few times a day until he gets the idea that he should to come and get the treat.

Each time he comes, try to move a little closer to the cage. This will give your guinea pig a chance to get used to your presence. With time he will become less apprehensive and eventually run and jump in excitement when he sees you coming.

Time to get more affectionate with your guinea pig …

Once your guinea pig is used to your presence, you can attempt physical contact by careful and gentle stroking, brushing and caressing his fur, scratching his ears or rubbing his belly. But be very careful and do not attempt to pick him up yet. And remember to be calm and tender as sudden movements or too much contact will only scare him away, and destroy the tentative bond of trust you’ve built with him, and possibly damage any relationship in the future.

How to hold your guinea pig, so you won’t hurt him?

When you first handle your guinea pig, do so in a quiet room. Use extreme caution when picking up and holding your guinea pig. Cup the torso with your hand and carry him gently, ensuring that his entire body is supported. Remember that your guinea pig has a very fragile bone structure and he can be easily injured if dropped or if your grasp is too strong.

If you are patient, he will eventually welcome your presence and the attention you are giving him. After a while, he will actually request it by squealing when he sees you near.
